The Blackboard Awards are a direct result of a comprehensive study conducted by a team of educational experts each year in Our Town and The West Side Spirit describing and evaluating early childhood, elementary, middle and high school educational opportunities for the City's children. Detailed reports on these schools are provided in the papers, and the most outstanding institutions are singled out in three categories—public, independent and religious schools—culminating in a moving awards ceremony every fall.
